EU’s AI Act faces tech giants’ resistance

As the EU finalises its groundbreaking AI Act, major technology firms are lobbying for lenient regulations to minimise the risk of multi-billion dollar fines. The AI Act, agreed upon in May, is the world’s first comprehensive legislation governing AI. However, the details on how general-purpose AI systems like ChatGPT will be regulated remain unclear. The EU has opened the process to companies, academics, and other stakeholders to help draft the accompanying codes of practice, receiving a surge of interest with nearly 1,000 applications.

A key issue at stake is how AI companies, including OpenAI and Stability AI, use copyrighted content to train their models. While the AI Act mandates companies to disclose summaries of the data they use, businesses are divided over how much detail to include, with some advocating for protecting trade secrets. In contrast, others demand transparency from content creators. Major players like Google and Amazon have expressed their commitment to the process, but there are growing concerns about transparency, with some accusing tech giants of trying to avoid scrutiny.

The debate over transparency and copyright has sparked a broader discussion on the balance between regulation and innovation. Critics argue that the EU’s focus on regulation could stifle technological advancements, while others stress the importance of oversight in preventing abuse. AI has already proven its worth in predicting storm tracks and could revolutionise weather forecasting globally.

Despite some limitations, AI’s increasing role in weather prediction is promising. Taiwan’s weather service forecasters hope ongoing partnerships with companies like Nvidia will enhance these tools, potentially leading to even more accurate predictions in the future.

AI boosts strawberry farming with disease detection tech

Researchers at Western University have developed an AI model that detects strawberry diseases and predicts ripeness with nearly 99% accuracy. The system, designed by Joshua Pearce and Soodeh Nikan, could significantly enhance crop quality and reduce waste. AI tools being developed to enhance prediction and management of future pandemics

Teams from UC Irvine and UCLΑ, part of the US National Science Foundation’s Predictive Intelligence for Pandemic Prevention grant programme, are working on an AI-based early warning system that analyses social media posts to detect early signs of outbreaks. They aim to track billions of posts on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) to identify public health trends and assess the potential outcomes of public health policies. However, the reliance on specific platforms and US-focused data limits its global application. Researchers are working to expand its reach.

Harvard Medical School and the University of Oxford have created a tool called EVEScape, which predicts virus mutations. This tool helps in developing vaccines and treatment strategies. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov commented on the recent arrest of Pavel Durov, the founder of Telegram, in France, claiming that Durov’s ‘too free’ approach to running the social media platform led to his downfall. Durov, a Russian-born tech entrepreneur, was placed under formal investigation by a French judge last week for alleged complicity in facilitating illicit activities on Telegram, including child sex abuse images, drug trafficking, and fraud. Durov’s lawyer dismissed the charges as ‘absurd,’ arguing that he cannot be held accountable for crimes committed by users on the app, which boasts nearly a billion users globally and is especially popular in Russia and other former Soviet states.

Lavrov, speaking to students at MGIMO University in Moscow, suggested that the investigation is part of a broader Western effort to control Russia, reflecting the Kremlin’s stance. He remarked that Durov did not heed Western advice on moderating his platform, which has been a source of friction with authorities. Despite years of pressure from Russia on Durov and his tech ventures, the country has rallied behind him after his arrest.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov emphasised that there have yet to be any negotiations between the Kremlin and Durov, who also holds French and UAE passports. He expressed concern that the situation in France might evolve into political persecution despite French President Emmanuel Macron’s denial of any political motives behind Durov’s detention. Lavrov further noted that Durov’s arrest, the first of a major tech CEO, has further strained relations between Moscow and Paris, marking a new low point in their diplomatic ties.

French Ministry of Justice weighs charges against Telegram CEO

French Ministry of Justice is weighing Pavel Durov’s charges to decide whether he will be placed under formal investigation following his recent arrest as part of a probe into organised crime on the messaging platform. Durov, who was detained on Saturday evening after landing at a Paris airport on a private jet, now faces scrutiny over the potential criminal liability of app providers and the broader debate about the balance between freedom of speech and law enforcement.

Telegram boasts nearly 1 billion users and is particularly popular in Russia, Ukraine, and former Soviet republics. Being placed under formal investigation in France does not imply guilt but signals that judges believe sufficient evidence exists to continue the probe. Such investigations can take years to either go to trial or be shelved. If Durov is formally investigated, judges will also consider whether he should be placed in pretrial detention, mainly if there is concern he might flee.

Currently, the broader investigation is focused on unidentified individuals and examines allegations including facilitating illicit transactions, possession of child sexual abuse material, drug trafficking, fraud, withholding information from authorities, and providing cryptographic services to criminals. The prosecutor’s office has not clarified which specific charges, if any, Durov might face and declared that an update on the investigation is expected soon.

Durov’s French lawyer has not responded to repeated requests for comment. His arrest has exacerbated tensions between Russia and France, especially given France’s support for Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia. President Emmanuel Macron has officially stated that the arrest was not politically motivated.

Durov has been in police custody since his arrest on Saturday and can be held for a maximum of 96 hours, or four days before judges must decide whether to proceed with a formal investigation.

Durov, who holds several citizenships, including the French, could be detained further as the investigation progresses.

Telegram, which boasts nearly a billion users worldwide and is especially popular in Russia and Ukraine, responded by stating that it complies with the EU laws and maintains industry-standard moderation practices.

The company dismissed claims that the platform or Durov himself was responsible for criminals’ app misuse.

On the other side, the Kremlin has expressed concerns that France’s accusations against Telegram founder Pavel Durov could be an attempt to limit freedom of communication unless supported by substantial evidence. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov announced that Russia is prepared to assist Durov due to his Russian citizenship, though his French citizenship presents additional challenges. Peskov emphasised that the gravity of the charges requires equally serious evidence to avoid perceptions of an effort to curtail communication freedoms.

Peskov also suggested that the case might be used to intimidate a prominent business leader and questioned French President Emmanuel Macron’s assertion that Durov’s detention was free from political motives. Russia has previously faced challenges in blocking Telegram and has fined the company for not removing content it deemed illegal.

The UAE has also called for clearer information about the arrest and investigation. The UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated that it is closely monitoring Pavel Durov’s case and has requested the French government to urgently provide consular services. The ministry emphasized prioritising its citizens’ care, safeguarding their interests, and ensuring comprehensive support are key commitments for the UAE.

Ultimately, Elon Musk confronted Emanuel Macron by responding directly to his post on X, claiming that ‘It would be helpful to the global public to understand more details about why he was arrested’, as he described it as an attack on free speech.

New AI device improves early cancer detection

South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust will continue using AI technology after a successful trial demonstrated its effectiveness in identifying bowel lesions. The trial involved 2,032 patients across 10 centres in the UK and used the GI Genius AI device during colonoscopies. After a while, this technology detected an additional 0.36 adenomas per procedure, helping to prevent potential cancer development.

Professor Colin Rees, a consultant gastroenterologist at the trust, highlighted the significance of the AI device in saving lives by increasing the detection of bowel abnormalities. The AI was particularly effective in identifying small or flat polyps often missed by the human eye, which can be crucial in early cancer prevention.

Bowel cancer remains a significant health concern in the UK, with 43,000 new cases and 16,000 deaths annually. The AI’s ability to detect adenomas in an extra eight out of 100 people without increasing complications is a promising advancement for medical professionals.

The trial, led by South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust and Newcastle University, has encouraged the trust to integrate AI technology into routine practice. As the AI continues to learn from images, its performance is expected to improve further, offering hope for wider adoption in the future.
