Oman

Oman’s connectivity performance is strong by regional standards. In September 2025, it ranked 21st worldwide for mobile speeds on Ookla’s Speedtest Global Index, placing it in the top quartile globally. Commercial 5G has been live since 2019, with thousands of sites rolled out under the TRA’s roadmap.

The country has built a distinctive interconnection footprint. Two carrier-neutral data centres, Equinix MC1 (Barka/Muscat) and SN1 (Salalah), anchor traffic locally and are situated near major cable landings. OM-IX operates from MC1, featuring listed peers (including global networks) and full IPv6 support. Wholesale statements indicate Omantel is invested in 20+ submarine systems with five landing stations in Oman, reinforcing route diversity between Europe, Asia and Africa.

On the governance side, Oman pairs a modern privacy law with enforceable cloud rules and an AI policy. The Personal Data Protection Law (Royal Decree 6/2022) is in force. The TRA Cloud and Data Centre Regulation was issued in September 2024, and MTCIT’s Public Policy for the Safe and Ethical Use of AI Systems (April 2025) sets national principles for the responsible deployment of AI systems. Together, these frameworks provide clearer guardrails for digital services than are typical in much of the region.
