Privacy group complains to Greek data protection authority against police biometric project

The Greek privacy advocacy group and European Digital Rights (EDRi) observer Homo Digitalis has raised questions, in an official letter to the Minister of Citizen’s Protection, about the legality of the biometric data processing activities proposed in the Hellenic Police’s smart policing project launched in 2019. According to Biometric Updates, once operational in spring 2021, the project would equip police units with smart devices that use biometric facial recognition and automated fingerprint identification. Officers could take photographs and collect fingerprints on the spot to cross-match them with data in central databases.
