GSMA report: Indonesia is an emerging digital economy giant

According to a GSMA report entitled ‘Spotlight on Indonesia: Seizing the digital transition opportunity now’ Indonesia is “strongly positioned to become a digital economy powerhouse in Southeast Asia’. The report highlights that the mobile sector in Indonesia has experienced significant growth with an estimated 176 million users and that it is transforming the agriculture and manufacturing industries. Moreover the study acknowledges that the “Internet has been the most important enabler of the country’s societal development and economic growth this century” but that the persisting divide in terms of Internet access remains the main barrier for citizens to to full participation in Indonesia’s digital society. 

The report provides suggestions on how Indonesia can close the digital gap including measures such as streamlined planning and administrative processes as well as progressive frameworks for the regulation of mobile.
