Google faces a regulatory confrontation with EU on news snippets

After the presentation of new copyright proposals by the European Commission last Wednesday, Google may face a regulatory confrontation in Brussels. The European Commission will examine whether the display of short snippets of news articles by services as Google News need to be subject to a so-called ‘snippet tax’. The legal investigation is triggered by complaints from European news publishers, who argue that websites as Google News ‘profit from their content without paying for it’.
