French authorities blocked and removed more than 2700 websites in 2016

According to French Interior Minister Bruno Le Roux, the government of France ordered the blockage or removal of more than 2700 websites in 2016 as part of its fight against ‘child pornographic and terrorist content’. This amount is a spike compared to previous years. According to Le Roux, ‘we’ve given ourselves unprecedented means to reinforce the efficacy of our actions’ to counter ‘an extremely serious terror threat’. Critics claim that these acts will not solve the issue of combating extremist content online.
