Following online threats, reporter receives threatening letter with suspicious powder

The media reports Slovenian reporter Eugenija Carl received an anonymous threatening letter containing a white powder which gave her an allergic reaction. Carl posted photos of the letter on her Facebook profile which reads ‘insulting names and hope for her death’. The letter referenced the defamation lawsuit she had filed and won against Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Janša. She received this letter after numerous threats, insults, and harassment over social media. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) emailed the prime minister’s office and Ministry of Interior’s press desk, but reportedly has not received a reply. Following this case and other insulting and threatening social media campaigns targeting journalists, the Slovene Association of Journalists published a document instructing effective legal responses to damage, pressure, threats journalists receive online and offline.
