EU pulls up Slovenia for declining media freedom

Ahead of Slovenia’s six-month European Union presidency in July, the EU Commission Vice President for Values and Transparency Vera Jourova pointed out the declining media freedom and said that it represented a threat to democracy and could lead to authoritarianism.

At the EU Parliament plenary early this month, she undermined the sustainable funding and the independence of the Slovenian Press Agency (STA). She also noted that frequent verbal attacks against journalists in the country were cause for concern.

International Press Institute (IPI) along with 18 other groups also called upon the EU to take decisive action to defend independent journalism and media freedom in Hungary, Poland and Slovenia.
