EDPS publishes opinion on EC proposal for ePrivacy temporary derogations on directive for combatting child sexual abuse online

The European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) has issued an opinion on the European Commission’s (EC) proposal for temporary derogations from directive 2002/58/EC for the purpose of combatting child sexual abuse online.

The EDPS highlighted that it was the purpose of the European legislator to expand the notion of ‘electronic communication services’ to include equivalent online services for ensuring the rights of all end users are protected when using these services. They also mentioned that  issues relating to derogations from the ePrivacy Directive apply to any initiative aiming at the collaboration for law enforcement purposes.
