New drone rules to affect UK hobby flyers

Hundreds of thousands of drone users may need new permits to fly outdoors.

New UK drone rules expand theory test requirements from 1 January.

Many new UK drone owners will need to pass a theory test before flying outdoors. Updated regulations take effect from 1 January 2026.

The British Civil Aviation Authority now requires a Flyer ID for drones weighing 100g or more. Previously, only heavier devices were covered.

UK regulators estimate up to 500,000 people could be affected by the change. Officials say the rules support safe and responsible drone use.

Children are included under age specific conditions, with supervision required for younger flyers. Flying without valid IDs remains illegal and punishable.
