Cyberattacks have surged dramatically, with organizations facing an average of 1,636 attacks weekly in the second quarter of 2024, according to Check Point Research. This translates to roughly ten cyber attacks per hour, marking a 25% increase on the previous quarter and a 30% rise compared to the same period last year.

The education and research sectors are amongst the hardest hit, experiencing over 3,300 attacks weekly. Government, military, and healthcare organisations also face significant threats, highlighting the diverse range of targets for cybercriminals. Hackers often exploit these sectors’ weak cybersecurity measures to extract sensitive information.

Geographically, Africa reported the highest number of weekly attacks, nearing 3,000, a 37% increase from last year. Latin America saw a 53% rise, while North America, despite having fewer attacks, experienced the most costly ransomware incidents. Over 1,200 ransomware attacks were recorded, with 58% targeting North American organisations.

Check Point Research emphasises the urgent need for robust cybersecurity frameworks to combat the growing threat landscape. Organisations are urged to prioritise cybersecurity and adopt tailored strategies to prevent further attacks and minimise damage.
