FBI seizes devices in Trump assassination investigation

Preliminary investigation suggests lone gunman in Trump shooting.

FBI investigates Trump assassination attempt, seizes shooter's devices.

The FBI is investigating the attempted assassination of Donald Trump by 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, classifying it as an act of potential domestic terrorism. Crooks’ shot grazed Trump’s ear during a rally in Pennsylvania, and he was subsequently killed by the US Presidential Protection Service at the scene. The FBI has seized Crooks’ phone and other devices, which are currently being analysed to uncover more details about the shooting.

Preliminary findings suggest that Crooks acted alone, but the possibility of co-conspirators is still under consideration. Law enforcement officials are scrutinising the sequence of events leading up to the attack, with hopes that the electronic devices will shed light on Crooks’ motivations. Suspicious devices found at the scene have been evaluated by bomb technicians, further contributing to the investigation.

In the wake of the shooting, misinformation and disinformation have proliferated on social media. Numerous false claims and conspiracy theories have emerged, including accusations that President Joe Biden orchestrated the attack and suggestions that the event was staged. Some individuals have even created copycat accounts on platforms like X and Instagram, pretending to be Crooks.

Cybersecurity experts and law enforcement are cautioning the public about the spread of false information. The FBI is relying on digital tips from the public, including photos and videos from the rally, to aid in their investigation and counteract the surge of misleading content online.
