29 May – U.S. senators demand investigation over TikTok’s alleged breach of children’s privacy
According to Reuters, four U.S. senators have urged the Federal Trade Commission in a letter to investigate allegations that the video app TikTok violated a consent decree protecting children’s privacy. U.S. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), and Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) wrote that “as the ongoing public health crisis continues to catalyze children’s increased tech use, the FTC must increase its attention to the dangers that minors encounter online, including the manipulation of kids’ attention and their data for advertising dollars.”
