US Congress rejects Autonomous Vehicles Federal Regulation

 

The US Congress voted against the American Vision for Safer Transportation through Advancement of Revolutionary Technologies Act (AV Start Act), the would-be first federal regulation concerning autonomous vehicles in the USA. The act would have created a framework for regulating, testing, driving, and deploying autonomous vehicles and ultimately pave the way for highly automated vehicles. The majority of the arguments against the bill revolved around the perceived risks to public safety, as recent accidents involving autonomous vehicle trials have resulted in fatalities. Although the federal regulation did not pass, several US states have already enacted their own autonomous vehicles legislations
