UN experts emphasise need to guarantee children’s rights and dignity online

On the occasion of Safer Internet Day, UN human rights experts reminded states of their commitment to human rights treaties and therefore  develop comprehensive legal frameworks strategies to protect children online. States were advised to ensure  technology companies have the mechanism to detect, report and block illegal content; collaborate effectively with law enforcement to ensure there is no misuse of platforms by criminals.

For an inclusive and safe digital space for children, the UN Special Rapporteur on the sale and sexual exploitation of children, Maud de Boer-Buquicch emphasised the need to adopt technology through a  child-centred perspective and integrate the issue of new technologies and their impact on children’s rights into existing initiatives and processes.
