On 6 November 2022, a message with the subject line ‘Charlie Hebdo of Belgrade’ was sent to Dragoljub Petrović, editor-in-chief of the Serbian newspaper Danas. This was done by an unidentified sender from an email address with the name ‘threateningaccount,’ threatening journalists, editors, and columnists with ‘barrages of bullets’ because of the newspaper’s editorial policy, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) reports. A number of death threats via email and comments on social media had already been sent to this newspaper in April 2022.

The Police in Belgrade pledged to strengthen patrols near the newsroom and requested journalists to call if they see anything suspicious. The prosecutor’s office in Belgrade also initiated an investigation, which was welcomed by CPJ.
