Shanghai apartment buildings secretly installed facial-recognition devices

According to Quartz, Shanghai appears to be secretly installing facial-recognition devices in apartment buildings since last year. Residents of the city’s Luoma Garden apartment complex told Chinese media Caixin that they were surprised to learn that facial-recognition equipment had been put in place within their building in coordination with the local police. These devices were installed to identify suspicious persons and prevent crimes. As of May, around one-third of Shanghai’s over 10,000 apartment complexes have been equipped such devices, according to Chinese newspaper Southern Weekly.
