Serbia has been elected Chair of the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) for 2025. During this period, Serbia will serve as the incoming Chair for 2024, joining the outgoing chair Japan and lead chair India at the head of the GPAI Council.

Established in 2020 by French President Emmanuel Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, GPAI’s primary goal is to establish global standards and regulations for the responsible development of AI. The initiative seeks to facilitate worldwide progress in AI technologies. The GPAI Secretariat operates under the umbrella of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), with expert centers currently situated in Montreal and Paris, and plans underway to open a new center in Japan.

Serbia joined GPAI just over a year ago, being one of the 29 member countries. Prominent members of GPAI include the United States, the United Kingdom, India, Japan, South Korea, Brazil, France, Germany, Türkiye, the European Union, and several other nations.

Artificial Intelligence in Serbia

Serbia has adopted a Strategy for Development of Artificial Intelligence in Serbia for the Period 2020-2025 in 2020 as the first national strategy on AI in the region of the Western Balkans. The strategy was developed through a participatory and inclusive process involving various stakeholders from academia, industry, government, civil society, and international organizations. The strategy aims to position Serbia as a regional leader in AI research and development and to use AI as a driver of economic growth, social welfare, and democratic values.

As part of the strategy, Serbia has announced the establishment of the Institute for Artificial Intelligence Research and Development in Serbia which will deal with the research into AI applications in various fields. The aim of the institute’s work is to create future personnel and attract investments in the field of AI.

Last year’s GPAI summit was hosted by India.
