Russia launches a register of social networks
Roskomnadzor, a federal service for the supervision of communications, launched a register of social networks in compliance with a federal law passed on 30 December 2020. The law requires social media to identify and block content that is illegal under Russian jurisdiction. In addition, the text obliges social media to create special mechanisms for receiving content removal requests and to publish an annual report on content removal activities. The register aims at monitoring tech companies’ compliance with these requirements. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, Likee, YouTube, Vkontakte and Odnoklassniki are already included in the register.
