Nigeria advances global media literacy agenda with new UNESCO institute

New initiative by UNESCO and Nigeria promotes critical thinking and digital resilience in evolving information environments.

Nigeria launches institute with UNESCO to strengthen media literacy globally.

An International Media and Information Literacy Institute is set to launch in Nigeria, in partnership with UNESCO, marking a significant step in strengthening global responses to misinformation and digital transformation challenges.

The institute will act as a hub for research, policy development and capacity development, equipping governments, educators and civil society with tools to engage critically with information. Media literacy is increasingly recognised as essential for democratic participation, particularly as digital platforms reshape how information is produced and consumed.

Officials emphasised that the initiative will promote inclusive access to knowledge while supporting resilience against manipulation and disinformation. The programme by UNESCO and Nigeria aligns with broader international commitments to ensure individuals can navigate complex information environments.

Supported by global stakeholders and national leadership, including Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the institute reflects a growing policy focus on linking digital literacy with governance, human rights and sustainable development.
