New European Commission report shows the importance of digital resilience in times of crisis

The European Commission published the 2020 Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI) which monitors Europe’s overall digital performance and tracks the progress of EU countries with respect to their digital competitiveness. It reveals progress in all member states and all key areas measured in the index. Finland, Sweden, Denmark, and the Netherlands are at the top of the index, followed by Malta, Ireland, and Estonia. Yet, DESI shows that COVID-19 has had a significant impact on each of the five dimensions tracked (connectivity, digital public services, human capital/digital skills, integration of digital technology by businesses, and research and development ICT). Hence, this year’s findings should be interpreted in line with the various measures taken by the European Commission and member states to manage the crisis and support recovery.
