Meta to restrict access to teenagers’ data

Meta plans to limit advertisers’ access to teenage users’ data on Facebook and Instagram by removing gender and post engagement data starting February 2023. Teenagers can later expect new controls to see fewer specific types of ads by March 2023. Prior restrictions were already in place to prevent advertising based on teen interests and activities.

Meta intends to impose new restrictions on advertisers’ access to the data of teenage users of Facebook and Instagram. Starting February 2023, advertisers will not be able to see teenage users’ gender or the type of posts they engage with. Only the user’s age and location will be used to show advertising.

In another change to be introduced in March 2023, new controls will allow teenage users to choose to ‘see less’ of certain types of adverts in both Facebook and Instagram.

Meta had previously put in place restrictions to stop advertising for teenagers based on their interests and activities.
