McKinsey: USD$250 billion of healthcare could be virtualised

McKinsey & Company reported in an article, that the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the use of telehealth, as consumer adoption has increased from 11% to 46% for US consumers due to cancelled healthcare visits. In addition, healthcare providers are seeing 50 to 175 times the number of patients through telehealth services than they did pre-COVID19. With the accelerated adoption of telehealth by both consumers and providers, the company estimates that up to USD$250 billion of current US healthcare spending could be virtualised. The article also identified challenges such as providers’ concerns about security, workflow integration, and the effectiveness of telehealth. Moreover, actual usage of telehealth (46%) remains significantly lower than consumer interest (76%).
