Kenya retires COVID-19 emergency measures

The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has announced the expiry of the COVID-19 emergency measures at the end of 2020. The measures had been enacted in March 2020 to encourage cashless transactions. They included cost-free mobile money transfers for amounts below Ksh.1000. From January 2021, mobile network operators will be at liberty to revert to pre-COVID-19 fees charged on mobile money transactions. However, the CBK has stated that bank-to-mobile wallet transfers will continue to be cost-free.
