Kenya: Increase in mobile money subscribers in first months of COVID-19

The Central Bank of Kenya noted that mobile money subscribers increased by 1.6 million following measures announced to facilitate cashless transactions in March 2020. There was also an increase in low-value transactions (below USD$10), which accounted for over 80% of transactions, while business-related transactions declined. The regulator has extended the March 2020 measures for six more months. The Business Daily reported that this has been protested by telecommunication companies.
