Israel Privacy Protection Authority issues privacy recommendations concerning e-learning

The Coronavirus outbreak led to a rise in the number of e-learning initiatives in Israel. Therefore, the Privacy Protection Authority published privacy guidance to individual users as well as educational institutions that engage in e-learning. The guide highlights the following recommendations: a) to use updated operating systems, b) to install firewall and antivirus programs, c) to abstain from providing personal details when using e-learning applications, and d) to take the time to understand the data protection and privacy implications of using each application. For example, the guide recommends connecting to Zoom using email accounts and not Facebook. The guide also recommends education institutions to use applications authorised by the Ministry of Education and apps designed especially for learning purposes, and to instruct teachers, lecturers, and professors on how to protect their students’ privacy
