Iran has suspended the Entekhab news website, alleging violations of press laws and decisions by the Supreme National Security Council. Although the specific reasons for the suspension have not been officially communicated to the website’s owner or management, it follows the scrutiny by the Press Supervisory Board of a video and report titled ‘Iran’s Brand Auction: Why Has Iran’s Foreign Policy Weakened So Much?’, which criticises Iran’s foreign policy under President Ebrahim Raisi.

The authorities deemed the video content as contrary to national interests and the fundamental policies of Iran. The Entekhab website has risen to prominence recently and was recognised for its alignment with various political figures, including those from previous administrations.

Why does it matter?

This episode underscores one of the numerous challenges confronting media outlets striving to voice their opinions in Iran. The absence of clear and transparent communication regarding the reasons behind the suspension raises severe concerns about the government’s accountability. It reflects Iran’s stance on press freedom, signalling a lack of commitment to international norms in this area. Not surprisingly, Iran ranked 177th out of 180 countries in the 2023 Press Freedom Index.
