Honolulu reaches agreement with Airbnb to identify illegal rentals

The City of Honolulu signed a memorandum of understanding with Airbnb in order to assist the government in addressing illegal vacation rentals. The platform compromised by co-operating with public authorities in terms of education, information sharing, and listing. The agreement requires all properties listed on the platform to have a Tax Map Key (TMK) and Transient Accommodations Tax (TAT) numbers. Moreover, the platform agreed to inform hosts about the law concerning short-term rentals, and to provide to the government monthly reports with TMK and TAT numbers along with links to each property listed. Airbnb will remove any listings deemed noncompliant.
