Google to install hundreds of connectivity balloons over rural areas of Indonesia

In partnership with several local Internet service providers, Google will install hundreds of helium-filled ‘Project Loon’ balloons at high altitudes above Indonesia to provide LTE-based connectivity in remote areas. Citizens of remote areas would be able to access up to 10Mbps connection through their mobile devices. While Google strengthens its position as infrastructure provider in major developing countries, some local telecom providers argue this will undermine their investments in fiber-optic cables.
