Google DeepMind partners with DOE for AI-driven science
The partnership builds on AlphaFold’s Nobel-recognised protein prediction work, aiming to advance US scientific leadership in fusion energy, materials science, and Earth studies.
Google DeepMind is partnering with the US Department of Energy (DOE) to support the White House’s Genesis Mission, a national effort to harness AI in accelerating scientific research.
The initiative will mobilise all 17 DOE National Laboratories alongside industry and academia to tackle pressing challenges in energy, national security, and scientific discovery.
Advanced AI tools, including the Gemini-powered AI co-scientist, are being made available to researchers to help synthesise large datasets, generate novel hypotheses, and accelerate biomedical, physical, and chemical discoveries.
Early results include drug repurposing candidates and predictions of antimicrobial resistance mechanisms validated in laboratory experiments.
In 2026, access will expand to include AlphaEvolve, AlphaGenome, and WeatherNext, AI models supporting advanced algorithm design, genomic research, and state-of-the-art weather forecasting.
DOE labs will also have access to Gemini for Government, combining Google’s AI capabilities with cloud infrastructure for multimodal reasoning and analysis.
The partnership builds on AI breakthroughs like AlphaFold, which predicted 3D protein structures and aided Nobel Prize-winning research. The Genesis Mission aims to boost US scientific leadership using advanced AI in fusion energy, materials science, and Earth system research.
