Google CEO calls for sensible AI regulation

Artificial intelligence is too important not to be regulated, argues Google CEO Sundar Pichai. In a Financial Times editorial, Pichai called for sensible AI regulation that does not limit the huge potential benefits that the technology could bring to society. There is a need, he noted, to balance potential AI harms with social opportunities, and regulation can play an important role in this regard. Pichai also made reference to Google’s AI principles and reiterated the company’s commitment to work to limit potentially harmful or abusive AI applications and to block the use of the technology if they ‘become aware of uses that are inconsistent’ with the principles.
