France: CNIL proposes  age verification systems

French data protection authority Commission nationale de l’informatique et des libertés (CNIL) has published its recommendations for devising age verification systems.  This is based on the EU General Data Protection Regulation that has requirements of  data minimization and purpose limitation. CNIL has suggested using “trusted third-party” systems that provide “triple privacy protection” and adopt anonymity practices to be used for verifying users age. In the recommendations CNIL states that it is urgent to set up an appropriate system of age verification for ensuring “more efficient, reliable and privacy-friendly devices.”
