Facebook will not limit political ads

Unlike other social media companies such as Twitter, who banned political ads in October, Facebook decided not to limit political ads on their platform. The company also refused to fact-check the ads arguing that they consider political speech to play a relevant role in which they do not want to interfere, according to Mark Zuckerberg. This decision faced harsh criticism, especially among certain groups of Democrats. Senator Elisabeth Warren and Democratic presidential front runner Joe Biden expressed discontent claiming it is driven by profit instead of democratic values. However, Facebook officials claim that it is not an economic issue. They have stated repeatedly that changing their policy on political advertising could disfavor Democrats and progressive organisations that criticise them. Also, the company announced that they would give users more control over the quantity of political ads they see.
