Facebook signs copyright agreement with French publishers

Facebook has agreed with L’Alliance de la presse de l’information générale (APIG), French publishers alliance on a framework to reuse their content on the platform. According to Reuters, the agreement includes licensing fees and the principles of how APIG’s members sign individual licences with Facebook. Two types of licenses are foreseen – to use the news publishers’ content on Facebook platform or to use it for the Facebook News services expected to launch in France in 2022.

This agreement relates to the EU’s Directive on the copyright in the digital single market and the French laws transposing it and concludes a two year battle between the dominating tech platform and France to protect the publishing rights and revenue of its press and news agencies.
