European Council gave its final approval of the Digital Markets Act

The European Council approved the Digital Markets Act, aiming to foster fair competition in the digital sector. It awaits signatures and will be in effect after 6 months. The Digital Services Act is anticipated to be adopted in September 2022.

The European Council gave its final approval of the Digital Markets Act (DMA), adopting the rules for a fair and competitive digital sector. Mr Ivan Bartoš (Deputy Prime Minister for Digitisation and Minister of Regional Development) stated that the Act would enable the European Union to “ensure fair competition online, more convenience for consumers and new opportunities for small businesses.” The DMA now awaits to be signed by the President of the European Parliament and the President of the Council. It will then be published in the Official Journal of the European Union and start applying after 6 months. Its twin, the Digital Services Act (DSA), is expected to be adopted in September 2022 by the Council.
