European Commissioner Avramopoulos highlights the importance of the Internet in fighting extremism

During the Geneva Conference on Preventing Violent Extremism: The Way Forward, European Commissioner Avramopoulos delivered a speech in which he stressed the importance of the Internet in combatting extremism. According to the Commissioner, fighting the Internet’s ‘abuse by terrorists to target our youngest, most vulnerable citizens with messages of violence’ needs to be prioritised. He also mentioned the EU Internet Forum and Europol, which are taking action to identify terrorist content and are looking into how to take it offline and ‘replace it with positive counter-messages.’
