EU Commission’s positive evaluation on self-regulatory measures countering hate speech
The Commission of the European Union has realised a fourth evaluation sheet on the implementation and compliance of the 2016 Code of Conduct countering racist and xenophobic hate speech online. The evaluation sheet shows positive results in the rapidity with which illegal hate speech content is removed. In particular, ‘all IT companies fully meet the target of reviewing the majority of the notifications within 24 hours, reaching an average of 89%. These results also include Instagram and Google+ which joined in 2018.’ Moreover, ‘On average, IT companies are removing 72% of the illegal hate speech notified to them.’. Twitter, Facebook, Microsoft, Youtube and Google+ are among the ‘IT companies’ that have adopted the self-regulatory measure.
