ECLAC report on the Opportunities and risks associated with the advent of digital currency in the Caribbean

The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) published a report earlier this year looking at the usage of digital currencies in the Caribbean region. The report analyses opportunities and risks associated with virtual currencies and considers how they could address regional deficiencies in the electronic payment infrastructure. The conclusion of the report is that the Caribbean region could benefit from innovations to payment technologies, such as digital currencies and mobile money. It is also recommended that ‘authorities in Caribbean countries embark on an inclusive approach to the exploration of digital currency that provides sufficient opportunity for public input and policy review’.
