Cyber-attacks on Internet-connected devices continue, this time targeting routers

Nearly one million routers used to access Deutsche Telekom (Germany’s largest telecom operator) Internet services were targeted by a new cyber-attack, which the German Office for Information Security (cited by Reuters) described as being part of a larger campaign targeting web-connected devices around the globe. Around 900 000 Deutsche Telekom customers (amounting to 4.5% of the operator’s fixed-line customers) were affected by the attack. The infection seems to have spread to other countries such as Brazil, the UK, Germany, and Ireland, using a technique similar to the one involved in the October massive cyber-attacks employing Internet of Things devices.
