China takes action against thousands of websites for ‘harmful’ obscene content

Chinese authorities have announced that they took action against thousands of websites found as distributing ‘harmful’ erotic or obscene content, since April this year. As Reuters reports, more than 2500 websites were prosecuted or shut down and more than 3 million ‘harmful’ posts were removed as part of the actions. Two news websites were also targeted by the authorities for distributing ‘illegal content’, although there seems to be no details available regarding the nature of this content.
