Brazil fines Facebook 1.5 million euros following Cambridge Analytica scandal

The Ministry of Justice and Public Security of Brazil has fined Facebook, after the misuse of personal data belonging to 443,000 Brazilian users in political campaigns. The Ministry stated that Facebook should have been “much more careful in the management of that data, since the consent model had relevant implications to the people whose data was exposed.” According to ZDNet, the fine of 1.5 million euros is the maximum amount that could be applied before new data protection rules enter into force in Brazil in 2020. According to Forbes, Facebook has 10 days to appeal the fine.
