Big Tech companies set to sign new code against disinformation

An updated version of the “Code of Practice on Disinformation” is set to be released this coming Thursday with about 30 signatories, including Big Tech companies such as Facebook, Twitter, Google, Microsoft and TikTok. A voluntary code was first introduced in 2018 and revisited again in 2021 as the Covid pandemic ushered in disinformation campaigns. The Vice-President for Values and Transparency Věra Jourová urged Big Tech companies to provide policymakers access to more country- and language-specific data, instead of the global or EU data they currently provide. This move would help states better target those spreading disinformation on a country level. The updated code will be enforced through the Digital Services Act (DSA).
