Banning TikTok in Europe
European institutions request employees not to use the TikTok app on their phones, citing data privacy and cybersecurity concerns.
It is a major shift from the EU’s position on TikTok. EU is likely to follow the US’s approach to Chines platform.
ByteDance-owned TikTok wants to prove to European governments that it is a leader in data protection. The company plans to build three European data centres and appoint a third-party agency to oversee access control, with yearly costs of €1.2 billion (US$1.3 billion).
