It is a given that Persons with Disabilities stand to greatly benefit the most from self-driving cars, unfortunately as It turns out, designing autonomous vehicles for Persons with Disabilities is an immense challenge. Developers are not making accessibility a priority.
“Waiting until a product is ‘finished’ to start thinking about accessibility is like completing construction of a skyscraper and then tearing part of it down to install an elevator.” said the author and deafblind disability justice lawyer.
The scepticism among Persons with disabilities is warranted, motor vehicle companies continue to produce inaccessible vehicles or cost thousands of dollars to retrofit for a driver with a disability .
