Alibaba has revealed its generative AI model, named Tongyi Qianwen, which will be integrated into all of the company’s apps. The model was demonstrated in a filmed demo and showcased its potential uses. Initially, the model will be integrated into DingTalk and Tmall Genie, and the company plans to open up Tongyi Qianwen to clients to build their own customized language models.

The unveiling came after China’s Cyberspace Administration has proposed new draft measures for regulating generative artificial intelligence (AI) services, requiring companies to undergo security assessments before launching to the public. The proposed rules require adherence to laws on data security and personal information protection. Charlie Chai, an analyst from 86Research, believes the rules will slow down progress but provide a more socially responsible deployment of the technology. The regulation could also benefit domestic companies and create obstacles for foreign companies providing AI services in China.
