The format included timed opening statements, rebuttals, observer questions and closing remarks.Timekeeping was enforced by Iuri Carvalho using a gong, with a warning gong 30 seconds before time and a continuous gong to end speaking.At the start of Team A’s opening there was also a brief technical interruption, when Helen reminded participants to use their earphones so online participants could hear, after which the team restarted.Team A’s opening argued that increased digital connectivity overall improves young people’s mental health and well-being.First, they presented connectivity as a social lifeline, citing the claim that 81% of teens say social media makes them feel more connected to friends and arguing that digital connection was a major protective factor against loneliness during the COVID-19 pandemic.Second, they argued that digital tools widen access to care, saying that teletherapy and AI chatbots can provide easily accessible, round-the-clock emotional support for underserved young people.They referred to a meta-analysis of 18 randomised control trials published in World Psychiatry to support the claim that smartphone-based interventions can reduce depressive symptoms.This served as their main example of digital tools widening access to support.Third, they argued that public concern about digital harms is often disproportionate to the evidence, citing a very large study of 350,000 young people which they said found that digital technology explained at most 0.5 of variation in well-being, and using comparisons such as wearing glasses or eating potatoes to suggest caution about over-attribution.Team B’s opening took the opposite position, arguing that digital environments and AI systems are already major determinants of young people’s mental health and can be harmful if left unchecked.Their speaker said that many teenagers increasingly turn to AI-driven platforms rather than parents, teachers or doctors for advice on friendship, body image and even self-harm.She invited the audience to imagine a 14-year-old turning at midnight to an AI companion that “never gets tired” and may become the most trusted voice in decisions about relationships, body image or life itself.She stressed that this was not purely hypothetical, citing a US survey suggesting that many teenagers had already experimented with AI companions and referring to ongoing cases in the UK, Europe and the US in which parents allege that chatbots encouraged suicidal behaviour.Team B then identified four areas of concern: privacy and online safety risks linked to AI-driven data collection and profiling; dependence and screen time driven by persuasive design and recommendation systems; distorted information and AI-generated misinformation or synthetic media; and broader structural risks created by unregulated digital systems for children and adolescents.In rebuttal, Team A argued that for young people who feel judged at school, isolated at home or alone in their struggles, digital spaces may be the first place where they feel seen.The speaker said the answer was not to make people less connected, but to make digital spaces worthy and safe places for young people to spend time.He again cited pandemic-era evidence and WHO data on adolescents being in constant online contact with friends, presenting this as community rather than pathology.Team A also accepted the need for safety, but said the goal should be “a world that’s digital, completely digital, but safe”.Team B replied that screen-based connection should not simply be equated with social connection.Their speaker argued that digitalisation is one of the biggest drivers of isolation because people are increasingly enclosed in device-centred silos, even when physically near one another.She also drew on reporting from the COVID period to argue that many young people experienced a severe lack of physical interaction and contact, suggesting that the internet may provide an emergency substitute in moments of isolation but not a desirable model in itself.The speaker then added several figures on prevalence, cost and age of onset of mental illness to stress the scale and urgency of youth mental health concerns.She used these figures to argue that youth mental health is the place to start.She also cited Swiss data suggesting that 11- to 15-year-olds are less happy than they were in 2018, alongside increases in problematic social media use and cyberbullying.Team B argued that people are not only bullied in school; when they go home they may still be unable to escape tormentors online.At the same time, the speaker said the problem was not digitalisation itself but the lack of regulation of online spaces, describing digital interconnectivity as a “double-edged sword”.Observer questions and audience interventions moved the discussion from abstract positions towards implementation. Pranjali argued that if initiatives such as ITU’s Generation Connect, WHO’s global strategy on digital health and digital mental health initiatives, OHCHR’s work on digital rights and UNITAR’s digital futures programmes were halted, millions of young people would lose access to education, digital health services, supportive communities and digital literacy opportunities.She acknowledged concerns about cyberbullying, misinformation and excessive screen time, but suggested that the real disagreement lay in how “increased digital connectivity” was defined.If it meant endless scrolling and constant notifications, she said, many criticisms would be valid; but if it meant meaningful and equitable digital inclusion, it should be defended.She also linked digital access to broader development goals, citing international efforts to accelerate the SDGs through digital technologies.Other speakers echoed the distinction between more digital consumption and meaningful digital inclusion.
One participant argued that cyberbullying, addiction and other online risks were reasons for safer platforms, stronger digital literacy and more responsible use, rather than for reducing connectivity.Another speaker, identifying herself as 17 years old, gave a personal account of how the internet supports study, access to learning materials, peer exchange, hobby-based communities and communication beyond school life, and concluded that the key task is to learn to use it wisely and with self-discipline rather than reject it outright.Team B’s closing remarks clarified that their position was not anti-technology or pro-disconnection.Instead, they described themselves as pro-safety and pro-transparency, calling for stronger regulation and more effective safeguards.They referred to UNICEF principles on children and AI-related safeguards such as algorithmic transparency, age verification technologies for AI apps used by minors, restrictions on manipulative AI applications, and increased investment in digital literacy and mental health support.These remarks clarified that Team B was advocating safeguards, transparency and regulation rather than disconnection.A second Team B speaker acknowledged the benefits of AI in education, scientific progress, health and innovation, but insisted that the risks remained serious.He referred to cases or examples from India and to arguments in The Anxious Generation to support the claim that over-reliance on technology is affecting key skills among youth.He again described digital connectivity as a double-edged sword: anonymous access to support may help some, but may significantly increase mental health risks for others.He argued that as long as platforms monetise addiction through harmful algorithms, and as long as AI child sexual abuse chatbots remain accessible “on the clear web”, the internet cannot be considered safe for children and adolescents.His conclusion was not that bans are needed, but that accountability, regulation, data protection and rights-based safeguards are necessary.He also proposed moving away from “scale at all costs” and towards smaller, task-specific AI systems for areas such as precision mental health care, backed by public regulation and community-rooted ethical research.An additional Team B intervention widened the scope beyond AI alone. The speaker argued that the discussion should not focus only on AI because the internet is a broader ecosystem stretching from infrastructure and cables to application-layer services.He added that some effects of digital technologies on mental and physical health remain unknown and argued for greater caution and awareness.The final observer segment highlighted two structural issues.
