Carlos Montoya Acosta opened from the WMO perspective by explaining that WMO coordinates 193 countries and territories in sharing climate, weather, and water data and science . He said the challenge is not only to produce scientific assessments, but also to communicate them in ways that people outside specialist communities can understand and use . As an example, he described WMO’s annual State of the Climate reports, which are accompanied by StoryMaps that present key messages through pictures, videos, and links for broader audiences such as decision-makers, community leaders, and companies . More concretely, she said Quimero uses a WhatsApp chatbot and weekly reports to inform farmers about current product prices and help them calculate the minimum price at which they should sell in order to recover production costs . In her account, this kind of structured and timely information can support farmers’ decisions and strengthen their position in the supply chain .
Clinton Odour added a connectivity and governance perspective, arguing that information and platforms alone are not enough if the infrastructure gap remains . From the ITU angle, he pointed to work on standards and on making connectivity affordable and accessible . He also framed standards as a matter of accountability: in a crowded digital environment, users need confidence that the data reaching them is credible and not just being provided for profit . She said action began when her initiative linked fast fashion factories, shopping habits, local pollution, and health effects in a way that made the issue concrete and personal . According to Angela, that work reached over 500,000 people to change some small behaviour, and the approach was later adapted from climate communication into health contexts as well . Her broader point was that young people can help create the missing link between expert knowledge and the communities that need to act on it .
Carlos later returned to the question of trust in digital science communication through everyday examples . He noted that many people already use weather apps to decide what to wear, whether to cycle, or whether to take an umbrella, often without realising that these simple decisions depend on a global infrastructure of observations, modelling, and international data sharing . He argued that this same system also matters for larger planning decisions, including sea-level rise, road building, and agricultural risks such as floods and droughts . In his view, sharing data across borders, maintaining robust infrastructure, and communicating effectively can help people make the right decisions and can save both money and lives .
Mayicel’s later intervention took a more personal and social turn . She described herself as a farmer’s daughter from the Colombian countryside and reflected on how that background had shaped her, even though she had once imagined leaving rural life behind . From that experience, she argued that young people can act as a bridge between rural and urban spaces, older generations, new generations, and new opportunities . She suggested that youth do not only carry tools and information; they also help humanise and simplify them so they become relevant and useful to people’s lives .
Clinton also pushed the discussion beyond awareness and reach towards outcomes . He said youth engagement on digital platforms is often judged by content creation and audience size, but that this is not enough . Instead, he argued that success should be assessed by whether the information shared through social media, apps, or dashboards is actually influencing decisions, and he suggested measuring impact “backwards” from the desired outcome .
The Q&A then deepened the discussion on demand-side design and co-creation . Stephen Wyber from the International Federation of Library Associations challenged supply-led assumptions by asking whether enough attention was being paid to the demand side and to how curiosity and interest are generated among users . Angela responded that in the age of generative AI it has become easy to create a solution and then look for a problem to fit it, whereas effective design should begin from first principles: identifying a real problem, speaking with communities, and finding the smallest correct intervention before scaling . Carlos added that climate communication is difficult because the subject is often not positive, so communicators must inform people honestly without causing panic or making them turn away from the message .
