US senators demand answers from AT&T and Snowflake on data breach

US senators press AT&T, Snowflake on data breach, fearing sensitive customer data auctioned or compromised, demand accountability.

U.S. senators have demanded answers from AT&T and Snowflake about a data breach affecting nearly all of AT&T's customers.

A bipartisan group of US senators has demanded answers from AT&T and Snowflake regarding a significant data breach affecting nearly all of AT&T’s customers. Senators Richard Blumenthal and Josh Hawley, who lead the Justice Committee’s privacy sub-panel, expressed concerns that AT&T’s sensitive data might be auctioned and fall into the wrong hands.

The senators’ letter to Snowflake CEO Sridhar Ramaswamy linked the breach to a series of security incidents affecting other Snowflake clients, including Ticketmaster, Advance Auto Parts, and Santander Bank. The breaches at Ticketmaster and AT&T appeared to be preventable, highlighting serious security lapses.

Blumenthal and Hawley have given AT&T and Snowflake until 29 July to provide detailed responses on how the hackers accessed Snowflake services, the nature of any investigations conducted, and the notifications sent to affected customers. This inquiry reflects growing concerns about data security and corporate responsibility.
