Zambia High Court orders restoration of internet services

According to a news report, the High Court of Zambia has ordered the government of President Edgar Lungu to restore internet services in the country. According to the report, internet services were interrupted under the orders of President Lungu, who was trailing behind opposition candidate Hakainde Hichilema in Thursday’s general election. However Chapter One Foundation Limited based in Zambia, brought an action against the Zambia Information Communication Technology Authority (ZICTA) challenging their act of blocking access to major social media websites including WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram and Messenger. The Court’s order granting the prayers of the Applicant is a major win for fundamental human right for freedom of expression and access to information in Zambia.
