WhatsApp sues India’s government over new internet rules

WhatsApp has filed a lawsuit in the Delhi High Court to prevent new internet rules from being enforced. The new rules enter into force this week and require making users’ messages traceable to outside parties for the first time. The platform believes that this would seriously undermine the privacy of its users in addition to impair its security, given that WhatsApp messages are encrypted. India’s minister of electronics and information technology said in a public statement that the right to privacy should be protected up to a certain point and that ‘it is also the responsibility of the government to maintain law and order and ensure national security’.
